Why can't a vertical line intersect a function more than once? Please help..

OpenStudy (owlcoffee):

|dw:1455655166816:dw| The reason is quite simple, regarding a function and it's definition, x cannot have more than one value for y. Just because we mention "y" as "f(x)" which means that we are limiting ourselves to just the binary relationship between these two variables.

Thx for the help
