The atlantic ocean was cruial for the Allies since many of their ships would cross it constantly to send supplies and cargo. So the germans created a blockade made up of submarines to engage the incoming cargo ships and hopefully cripple England.

If they loose control of the atlantic ocean, United States would have no means to send vital cargo to England.
