Mitochondria can help with..

1: Cellular respiration, like Tennis stated! More specifically, it is used to break down food molecules; which releases a small amount of energy along the way, so FFAsinger is right about that! Note: this is through a chemical equation, inverse to the photosynthesis equation. The equation is, glucose+oxygen=carbon dioxide+water+energy, (additionally to adenosine triphosphate..)





2: It could be used like a powerhouse cell! Which is were the location of ATP is synthesized!

To sum up what it can do is, respiration, consumption, and can produce ATP, which is an energy molecule. So, in other words, they ARE symbiotic and helpful!
