To substitute the first equation into the second first we need to rewrite it in terms of y or x, I choose y. y - 2x = 8 y - 2x + 2x = 8 + 2x y = 2x + 8 Now we use this new definition of y and substitute in for the y in 16 + 4x = 2(y) 16 + 4x = 2( 2x + 8 ) Now solve for x: 16 + 4x = 2( 2x + 8 ) 16 + 4x = 4x + 16 0 = 0 This is true always, so the lines are the same line and there are B, an infinite number of solutions
