The fact that the Soviets were the first to send up a satellite, and later a man up into space, was a demoralizing blow to the US (some Americans were happy for them though) [1]. All sides had demanded their peoples to put more effort, than ever before into the space race, even if it was dangerous to do so [2]. Star Wars, which was supported by Reagan, Ford, Carter (and George Lucas), had a negating effect on M.A.D. [3]. Source(s): 1.
