Help with geometry problem please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x=(x-2)*(x+4)

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

first you have to use distributive property

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i get 9x=x^2 +4x-2x-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then 9x=x^2 +2-8 and thats where im stuck

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

you have to make the equation equal zero on the other side now

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

so you would do 9x-what you got when you distributed

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 0=x^2 -7x-8?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

almost change the sign remember that there will be an imaginary negative

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

therefore −x2+7x+8=0

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

−x^2+7x+8=0

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

so far so good?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

alright now you would factor it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

are you familiar with factoring?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes it just idk what to factor

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

−x^2+7x+8=0

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

is a quadratic equation so it can be factored

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

http://www.purplemath.com/modules/factquad.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it (8-x)(1+x)

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

almost remember the negative sign

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

you did a good job but remember that the x has to be in front or else your numbers will be different/confusing Therefore (−x−1)(x−8)=0

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

and your two responses would be.......

OpenStudy (anonymous):

two responses?

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

yes quadratic always have two answers :)

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

got it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thanks

OpenStudy (daniellelovee):

no problem :) and just in case x=−1 or x=8
