Help with a word problem question. (8th grade level) *Picture Included*

OpenStudy (ageta):

what is the question

OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

what is your opinion please ?

OpenStudy (bigdaddyharsha):

answer is C

OpenStudy (ageta):

i think we have to use substitution or elimination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See .10 and .25? Those are the cents.

OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):

I dont have an opinion because I don't fully understand the question @jhonyy9

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

ok i agree with C. but can you explain @bigdaddyHarsha why you said C ?

OpenStudy (bigdaddyharsha):

According to the Question X is quarters, and y is dimes, so i think there is no trick on finding the answer because X = 14, and y =17

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

@bellezabrilla how you think what mean ,,quarter" and what mean ,,dime" ?

OpenStudy (ageta):

it is c because if you multiply 14 and 25 plus 17 time 10 350+ 170

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

ok. @bigdaddyHarsha but why you have selected like right answer C. ?

OpenStudy (alexatiger):

Isn't the question giving you the answer? Like you could plug in 14 times .25 or 17 times .10.

OpenStudy (ageta):

=520

OpenStudy (ageta):

14*25+17*10=520

OpenStudy (ageta):

do you understand how i got that @bellezabrilla

OpenStudy (bigdaddyharsha):

because x = 14 which refers to quarters, and y =17 which is dimes so answer c refers to 14 quarters and 17 dimes.

OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):

Yes I have a full understanding of the question now thank you so much for your help @jhonyy9 @bigdaddyHarsha and @ageta

OpenStudy (ageta):

np

OpenStudy (bigdaddyharsha):

no probs

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes @bigdaddyHarsha this is right but everybody than you check the text of this exercise how begining ,,Ian has x quarters and y dimes " so from this result after there is solved that the roots are x=14 and y=17 and substituted them where you get the equation solved so from these result that C. is right sure hope is understandably sure right easy

OpenStudy (bigdaddyharsha):

Thanks @jhonyy9

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

was my pleasure good luck bye and anytime

OpenStudy (bellezabrilla):
