Consequences of Mutations At first, you may think that a mutation will always result in damage to the organism. However, on occasion, a mutation will cause an individual organism to develop in a way that is slightly different from the rest of the population. Although mutations are always random, they are not always bad. For example, even though most penguins that inherit a gene mutation might have problems or even die, on occasion one penguin might inherit a mutation that makes its lung capacity greater, so it can hold its breath for a longer period of time.
