KjSaif (kjsaif):

Refer to the dog weights box-and-whisker plot in answering the question. In which quarter are the data most concentrated? A. first quarter B. second quarter C. third quarter D. fourth quarter

Atsie (atsie):

Hmm, well where is the box and whisker plot?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

Atsie (atsie):

So @KJSaif what is your guess on this and why?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

i'm not so sure what most concentrated means which sucks

KjSaif (kjsaif):

could you tell me what it means

Atsie (atsie):

In this sense, concentrated means clustered or gathered very closely. And don't feel bad :) We have to learn new things all the time!

KjSaif (kjsaif):

so gathered you mean the dots that are most clustered in which quarter?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

or no?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so the closer together the data is the smaller the part of the box and whisker plot... or more concentrated, so to run through some basics... Quarter 1: Lowest score to lower quartile or quartile 1 Quarter 2: Quartile 1 to the median Quarter 3: Median to upper quartile or quartile 3 Quarter 4: Quartile 3 to highest score so by looking at the quarters... which is the most compact... or smallest this is the most concentrated. hope it helps

Atsie (atsie):

Yes, that would be the best way to put it. So the area that is boxed off which quarter would that be? (given with the info that you were given above)

KjSaif (kjsaif):

um i'm sorry if i'm wrong but maybe q1, q2 or q4

KjSaif (kjsaif):

wait i think Q1

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well if you look at the scale, Q1 goes from 49 to 51 is there anything smaller..?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

54 to 55

Atsie (atsie):

Well, lets take a look at these "definitions" we'll call them again. Quarter 1: Lowest score to lower quartile or quartile 1 Quarter 2: Quartile 1 to the MEDIAN Quarter 3: Median to upper quartile or quartile 3 Quarter 4: Quartile 3 to highest score I have median capitalized for a reason. Your median is seen as the dot in the MIDDLE of the box already outlined for you. This is probably confusing have two people helping you at once. Sorry.

KjSaif (kjsaif):

so the answer could be Q2?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so where does Q2 start and finish on the scale..?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

you need to look at where each quarter starts and finishes... the smallest difference between start and finish is the most compact or concentrated

KjSaif (kjsaif):

i don't know which quarter is for 54 and 55

KjSaif (kjsaif):

well 54 to 55

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so what quarter is that..?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

i don't know (;-;) i'm new to this. Maybe Q2 or Q1 thats all i know

KjSaif (kjsaif):

is it Q2?

KjSaif (kjsaif):

what's the median in this
