Thank you, I was trying to explain this to someone and that's exactly what I said. They are convinced it's A because "Dresses" is plural and "were" is the verb. Thank you again.

I am curious about what the person said or why the person did not also choose" Across Five Aprils" are about soldiers in the Civil War.  Aprils is plural. 

Let's hope that the other person went with the Martians.
