How were the political structures of the Jamestown and Plymouth colonies different? The Plymouth Colony was organized around its charter, which gave colonists the same rights as other Englishmen. The Jamestown colonists were largely separate from English rule once it was clear they were not going to find gold. The Jamestown charter provided the colony with the basis for a system of consensual self-government. The Plymouth colonists did not settle in the area specified in their charter, so they wrote their own governing rules.
