summY INFO: Locate the full journal article in a library collection or online and answer the following questions about the study design. Source: Mozaffarian D and others: Changes in diet and lifestyle and long-term weight gain in women and men. New England Journal of Medicine 364:2392, 2011. Subjects in a large 20-year study of lifestyle factors and weight change gained an average of 20 pounds in 20 years. Less exercise led to weight gain, but the kinds of foods people ate had a larger effect than changes in physical activity. Increased consumption of French fries alone led to an average weight gain of 3.4 pounds every 4 years. Greater intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, yogurt, and nuts resulted in weight loss or no gain. The results of this study show how small changes in eating, exercise, and other habits can result in large changes in body weight over the years. QUESTION #1 The main objective of the study was to A)assess the effects of body weight gain on lifestyle practices over time. B)describe prominent lifestyle behaviors of health professionals. C)describe changes in body weight over time among health professionals. D)assess the effects of specific lifestyle practices on body weight gain over timE
What do you think?

Weight changes were assessed by self-reports of body weight every four years throughout the study. What did the researchers do to ensure the accuracy of self-reported body weight data? A)The researchers did not ensure the accuracy of self-reported body weight data. B)The statistical analysis included a standard correction factor for underestimation of self-reported body weight. C)The researchers validated self-reports of body weight against measurements taken by study staff in a subset of the study sample and found them to be highly correlated. D)Subjects measured body weight at home using scales that electronically transmitted measurements to the study database.
C. The article states "In a validation subsample, questionnaire-reported and staff-measured weights were highly correlated"

Compared to those who got 6 – 8 hours of sleep per night, study participants who got less than 6 hours of sleep per night A)were no different with regard to body weight gain. B)were less likely to gain weight. C)were more likely to gain weight.
"with greater weight gain occurring with less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours of sleep per night" so C)were more likely to gain weight.
Average weight gain in the study population was a mere 0.8 pound per year. Modest weight gains over time are associated with A)cardiovascular disease. B)All of these responses are correct. C)diabetes. D)cancer.
Average long-term weight gain in nonobese populations is gradual — in the cohorts we studied, about 0.8 lb per year — but accumulated over time, even modest increases in weight have implications for long-term adiposity-related metabolic dysfunction, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. B)All of these responses are correct.
Why might increased consumption of foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and yogurt lead to better weight management? A)These foods may contribute to satiety and thereby reduce intake of other foods. B)All of these responses are correct. C)These foods all have low energy density. D)Components of these foods have been shown to increase metabolic rate.
"Their inverse associations with weight gain suggest that the increase in their consumption reduced the intake of other foods to a greater (caloric) extent... and would augment satiety" So A)These foods may contribute to satiety and thereby reduce intake of other foods.
Which of the following is a reasonable interpretation of the study results? A)All of these are reasonable interpretations of the study data. B)For long-term weight management, it is better to get an extra 30 minutes of sleep per night than to get up early and exercise. C)Diet quality has no effect on diet quantity. D)Small changes in behavior can have large effects on health when compounded over time.
