OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

A 5 number summary means you need to find Min, Median, Max, Q1 and Q3 So it would help to first order each sets of data in order from least to greatest

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So for state A would it be 21, 22, 23, 24, 25?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I just brought together the same numbers and it's 5, so....

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Correct for state A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And for state B, it would be 20, 21, 23, 4,6 50?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*46

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hm?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Double check that 46 for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

The numbers are 20, 20, 21, 22, 23, 23, 24, 46, 50 ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, so then 24 instead of 46 mb

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

There ya go Okay...so the 5 number summary part is done Now the IQR *interquartile range...what would that be for state A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And B would be 3

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Awesome! Alright...now symmetry...are these symmetric?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's the main problem. How would I figure that out exactly?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I made a graph out of the points, and it looks like A is symmetric and B isn't.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

haha I was drawing a plot out.but remember that's a bar graph not a box plot...but it still gets our point across So you're right...it doesn't look like B is symmetric...why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because 50 and 46 are much higher than the rest of the points.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Right...they are called "outliers" and they skew plots to the right or the left as you can see it has done here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mhmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I'm done?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, thanks for the help.

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Yeah you're done! sorry haha helping others!
