Alleles are different versions of the same gene.

For instance, a plant may have only one gene that determines its height, but one allele of this gene produces a short plant while another produces a tall plant. This way, plants of the same species may be tall or short (or even somewhere in between) depending on the specific alleles they possess.

For example, a gene for rolling your tongue. Some people can roll their tongues and some cannot. These are the results of two different alleles. Allele which lets you roll your tongue and the other that doesn't.
