Inverse Variation. MEDAL for help!

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

y varies inversely with x. If y = 40 when x = 16, find x when y = -5.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@jhonyy9 @KamiBug

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

do you know what mean direct and invers variation ?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I am pretty sure that the formula for inverse variation: \(\large y = \frac{k}{x}\)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

for this case of invers variation from your above exercise how will result this numbers ?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Okay so \(yx = k\). I can use that by \((40)(16)= 640\). \(\large -5 = \frac{640}{x}\)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

And I would try to find what \(x\) would equal to.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Is that correct?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes using this above wrote formula is right sure

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

\(\large -5 = 640x\) \(\large x = -0.0078125\)

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

why so ???? above have wrote 640 -5 = ---- so from this x = ? x

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

x = -128

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

yes

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Thanks!

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

np you are welcome
