jagr2713 (jagr2713):

Sketch the graph of the rational function.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

\[f(x)=\frac{ (x-1)(x+4) }{ (x-1)^{2} }\]

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

we could cancel out the (x-1) since there is one on the top and bottom

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

but the thing is we have a restriction going on... x can't be that certain number otherwise the function will be undefined.

jagr2713 (jagr2713):

So how would we graph this

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

ok.. \[f(x) = \frac{x+4}{x-1}\] because the x-1 already canceled itself so what x can't we have.. so first solve x-1=0 because it will tell you which number can't be x

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

because if we have like 2/0 we have an undefined case. so nothing should be graphed there

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

and then afterwards create a chart like |dw:1456896201109:dw| plug x into the function
