it sounds like it would be the mean or the average which is typically what happens in cumulative grading systems.

If I were you I would put something to the effect of: "Because the low test score is dramatically different from the other test scores, it potentially reflects an outcome less than desirable. When we take the mean, or average, of all 4 test scores it gives a more adequate representation of the test outcome and therefore understanding of the material."
