Human genes may be on any of the 23 pairs of chromosomes. Each polypeptide an organism synthesizes has a gene that codes for it. An important protein that has well-studied genes is hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the molecule that carries oxygen in the blood. Hemoglobin is made of four polypeptide chains, two of each of two types. It's made of two alpha-globin chains and two beta-globin chains. The alpha-globin genes are on chromosome 16, and the beta-globin genes are on chromosome 11.
