OpenStudy (narissa):

can someone please help me solve this? Absolute value functions

OpenStudy (narissa):

OpenStudy (narissa):

is -19 the answer?? @Directrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|-11+8| = |-3| the absolute value would be 3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

So, first, what does an absolute value do?

OpenStudy (narissa):

um describes the distance of a number on the number line?

Directrix (directrix):

@narissa is -19 the answer? No.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

well, it does, now can a distance be negative?

OpenStudy (narissa):

no

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok, so in general, the absolute value takes whatever is inside and makes it positive.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

what is inside is evaluated like any other problem. So for yours, you have |x+8| right?

OpenStudy (narissa):

yes is -11 "x"?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yea, so what is your result of -11+8?

OpenStudy (narissa):

-3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so now, when that goes inside an absolute value, |-3|, what do we get?

OpenStudy (narissa):

positive 3?

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yea

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you got it :)

OpenStudy (narissa):

ohh so 3 is my answer thanks so much

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):
