Suppose you are flying from Pittsburgh, PA to Los Angeles, CA. The distance between the cities is 2,400 miles and the plane's speed is 450 mi/hr. What is the speed of the wind? The trip will take 11 hours. Any help? I got a formula of: 11 = 2400/450+x + 2400/450-x I got 10.7 with decimals but any other help would be great.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

2400/450 = 5,33 hours without wind with wind speed 225 miles/h what is exactly the half part of 450 miles/h so this resulted 5,33 hours will be doubled - yes ? so than will be 10,66 hours but you know that the trip will take 11 hours so how you think that can calcule it exactly ?

The wind speed is not 50, since it is greater! 2400/500 + 2400/400 = 10.8, not 11 So x ~= 78.335!
