The Trail of Tears.
That, in real history, is the route the Native Americans were forced to walk in order to reach their forced new reservations (white men stole their land, forced them somewhere else.)

Let's say this happened in 1602 (just making this up, but let's say it really happened then).
You'll need to keep that real fact.
Okay, so there was also a legendary flower known in historical records which gave the Native American women hope.
This is where you can alter details and add fiction. Maybe it was some magical flower which floated mysteriously and glowed. Maybe it has magical powers.

Does that make sense?
