Working together, Jasmien and Sumalee can pick forty bushels of apples in 5.48 hours. Had she done it alone it would have taken Sumalee 9 hours. Find how long it would take Jasmine to do it alone.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Basically you need to use the same formula we used last time. Last time we were to find the number of hours that 2 guys would need to complete 1 job working together; here you already know that the 2 girls can complete the job working together in 5.48 hours. The only think you need to find is how long it would take Jasmine to do the job alone.

OpenStudy (joshoyen):

Hm so Jasmine Sumalee -------------- + ------------------- = 5.48 hours ? ?

@mathmale

OpenStudy (joshoyen):

woops made a mistake Jasmine Sumalee -------------- + ------------------- = 5.48 hours ? 9

OpenStudy (joshoyen):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Neither Jasmine nor Sumalee is a mathematical quantity; these are labels. Model your solution of this problem on the previous one on which we collaborated. 40 bushels -------------------------- = 5.48 hours. Solve for S. 40 bushels 40 bushels ----------- + ------------- 9 hours S hours

OpenStudy (joshoyen):

Hm, I'm confused on this part @mathmale

OpenStudy (latinc):

try this J + S = 40bushels / 5.48hours S = 40bushels / 9hrs J = 40bushels / ?hrs

OpenStudy (latinc):

40B/5.48hr = 7.3rounded -> bushels per hour S -> 40B/9hr = 4.44 -> bushels per hour J -> (J+S) -S = 7.3 -4.44 ->bushels per hour
