(2) the societies of the soviet union were far too fragmented. The eastern part - ie Asians - were considered second class citizens.
(3) communism was a failure in that it completely sucked the incentive out of otherwise industrious people. The government couldn't manage to keep the people content with things as basic as housing and food.

in 1990/03/11 Lithuania was the first country to declare independence from USSR, not to mention the disidents and such, that always spread the news about USSR not protecting human rights, which they accepted back in Helsinki 1975
