So first, the emancipation proclamation helped to eliminate slavery. In a war fought mainly over slavery, this was a big step in the path towards abolishing slavery.
It also changed the aim of the war from preserving the union, to the fight for human freedom and rights.
The emancipation proclamation helped establish the 13th amendment. When accepted, the 13th amendment would abolish slavery throughout america.
