No way! You can’t believe it! After spending all day listening to Z100, Portland’s #1 Hit Music Station, you have won two VIP backstage passes and a chance to win either a new Volkswagen Beetle or $25,000!! This just might be the best day of your life! As you jump up and down in your room in excitement, it dawns on you, your car is in the shop, your parents are at work, the concert starts in 3 hours, and you and your best friend don’t have a ride. You stop jumping; your brain goes into overdrive; you think, “What are my options? This is practically a life or death situation!”

After multiple text messages with your friend, you decide you will each take a cab and meet by the entrance. Now it’s just a matter of choosing which cab service to use. The following chart displays the pricing information for the two local cab companies: Cab Company Boarding Rate Meter Rate Cabs-R-Us $6.00 $1/2 per Mile Taxi-Awesomeness $2.00 $3/4 per Mile Question 7 (1 point) Question 7 Unsaved Create an equation to calculate the cost of traveling to the concert using the Cabs-R-Us service. Omg, I'm so sorry, I got no clue. Maybe @jabez177 or @kayders1997 can help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

Well there is a lot going on here, but I would keep all my equations straight first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i just need the equations i could figure out the rest

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

Okay well how much is the cabs are us going to charge you per mile?

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

50 cents per mile right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um booarding is $6 on cabsrus and $2 on taxiawesomeness

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

yes and those are on time fees so that will be your b, the rates will never change

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1st is 1/2$ and the second is 3/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

per mile

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

Yes that will be a variable that will depend on how many miles you have driven so that will be like your slope

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

so for cabsrus you will have y=.5x+6 where x will be the number of miles you traveled you wanna try the other equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u get that

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

because okay say you go to a cab place you give them money right away for the cab? So say you get in you pay 6 dollars, now you have payed that you don't have to pay it again does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

Than after that they are going to charge you by the mile so for every time you travel you are going to pay 50 cents or .5 so think if you travel one mile it will close 50 cents if you travel 2 times it will cost 1 dollar 3 miles 1.5 thats where you get the .5x if you plug in 1 2 and 3 for x you will get the values for y that I said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so whats the secong equation

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

what are they charging you by the mile?

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

.75 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

because thats per mile you have to multiply it by x because they are charging you by the mile so you will have .75x+_____ what is the value you would have to pay right away for hopping in the cab?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

Yep so that would go in that blank so y=.75x+2 good job :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i just plug in how many miles into x right?

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okey thanks dude

OpenStudy (kayders1997):

No problem
