What are the patterns of successions?

OpenStudy (fatir5):

Patterns of succession which most probably is called as Ecological Succession is a series of events that takes place when one population of species is replaced by another, the former population setting stages for the latter ones. For example, in harsh conditions and on hard rocks, no plants can grow but Lichens can. So lichens would grow there and would convert hard rocks into soil during the course of its growth, thus setting stage for vascular plants which now can grow there and replace lichens.
