because at the time women were fed up with not having the money to take care of their families and because of the hard times the men would congregate in bars and taverns and drink and alcoholism was a growing concern and as women had gained the power  they had considerable sway with politicians who wanted reelection and churches spoke out against alcoholism because  of the belief of it being a sin and eventually with all the protesting governments stepped in and put a stop to alcohol consumption
