Nitrogen fixing bacteria convert Nitrogen to nitrates. Plants cannot absorb nitrogen directly, but they can absorb nitrates very readily. Thanks to Nitrogen fixing bacteria.

By the way, plants having root nodules have a large number of bacteria in those root nodules. Bacteria convert nitrogen to nitrates for plant, while getting food from plant in the process.
