to white settlers and railroad companies The idea of the Dawes Act was to move the Natives away from their lands to, one, acquire the space for a railway, and, two, to assimilate them into white American culture. The Dawes Act gave each head of a family a parcel of land on which they must farm. The problem was that the Plains Natives did not know how to and did not want to farm.
