Can someone help me with the rules of subject-verb agreement with team? Question is: The team (was, were) fighting among themselves over the choice of a new captain.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer would be was because it makes no sense to say: The team were fighting among themselves.

OpenStudy (daniee_bruhh):

^ Yup I agree. You would only say were if team had an s.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok, thank you

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Why use was and or were because it just makes mere sense? Can you guess.
