Should 17-year-olds be allowed to vote nationwide? Danielle M. Combee Why should 17-year-olds not be allowed to vote? They are certainly old enough to take on that responsibility. 17 is old enough to “get their feet wet and learn” as I like to say. At 16 they already get jobs and have to pay taxes. They should have a say of where those taxes go. 17-years-old is their last year before they go off into the world. “17-year-olds in a more structured environment of living with their parents and going to high school may be more likely to take advantage of their right to vote than some 18-year-olds who have moved out into the world and the distractions of college”, says Rob Richie, executive director of FairVote. 18-year-olds were drafted and sent to fight for their country during the Vietnam War when they couldn’t vote. They fought for their country so that their country could be free and they don’t even have all of their rights. It’s just not fair that they have to risk their lives and not have any rights. Wouldn’t you want to be able to vote if you had to fight for your country just so that the people would be able to hold elections? 16-year-olds have to pay taxes just like adults. In fact, they pay almost $9.7 billion dollars in sales taxes alone. They may not be technically adults, but they still have to pay for the money they make. Over 80% of high school students work before they graduate. 17-year-olds work majority of these and pay the majority of the taxes. 17-year-olds have a right to vote. What about being tried as adults? 16 and up are “adults” in the court system. If they are considered adults if they commit a crime, then they should be considered adults politically. 17-year-olds are just as guilty at committing crimes just as adults are as guilty at committing crimes. So come on! 20 states have already said that 17-year-olds can vote in certain elections. Let’s make it so they can vote in any election, nationwide. What are you waiting for? 17-year-olds are just like you and me. Let them make the choice of who will be elected, whether its city, county, state, or even for the presidency! Give them a choice!
