I've been stuck on this question for while, please help? Will happily fan and medal! (: The average age of the starting lineup of an NBA basketball team is 29 years. The ages of four of the five players are 25, 26, 29, 32. What is the age of the fifth player?
@skullpatrol
Any ideas?
Recall the definition of the average of a set of numbers is the sum of the numbers divided by the number of numbers.
What kind of equation would I use to solve this?
$$\huge 29 = \dfrac{25+26+29+32+x}{5}$$
"average" is the key word here. How does one go about finding the average of a group of numbers? skullpatrol's response is excellent.
29= 112 + x / 5 Is that right so far?
You should multiply both sides by 5 first.
do I multiply each of the numbers individually? Such as 25 * 5, 26 * 5, 29 * 5, 32 * 5?
Multiply both sides by 5. This will remove the fraction on the right side. No, do not multiply each of those 4 given numbers individually. Please type your result here, so that we can give you further feedback on what to do.
