Not sure, but some definitions says the main character of drama. Or other literary work.

I think for The CHanging Light it would be Sna Fran but im not positive and the old man would be the protagonist for Hay for the horses

However, another definition defines someone who competes, is against, or is opposed to. However, I see that the first item is more common.
