It means that they are on after another such as.........8and9....77and78..........30and31.....so on

so for each of the big ones you have to add 1 to the small on..if that make sense?

so if x is the small number then the big one is x + 1

so in this question you need to know what these numbers are and you know their sum.........so you can set up an equation

x + (x + 1) = 244

Now you can combine like terms to get : 2x+1 = 244

subtract one : 2x = 243

divide by two: x = 121.5
