The sum of 2 consecutive intergers is 244.what is the smaller interger?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

First, you are on the wrong section. Second, I can still help you ^-^

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

What do you think consecutive means?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

It means that they are on after another such as.........8and9....77and78..........30and31.....so on

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

so for each of the big ones you have to add 1 to the small on..if that make sense?

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

so if x is the small number then the big one is x + 1

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

so in this question you need to know what these numbers are and you know their sum.........so you can set up an equation

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

x + (x + 1) = 244

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Now you can combine like terms to get : 2x+1 = 244

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

subtract one : 2x = 243

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

divide by two: x = 121.5

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

And that is your answer because x is the small integer

OpenStudy (mathwizzard3):

Does that make sense? I hope it helps! Have a nice day!

OpenStudy (samsungfanboy):
