It's important to be respectful because it gives you good people skills, it avoids conflict, it helps you become more responsible, it keeps you self-aware and makes having relationships with others easier. Also being respectful teaches others around you to be more respectful to you.

You shouldn't be disrespectful because it causes you to diminish the worth of other people, hurts relationships and teaches your peers that it's okay to disrespect you.
