can someone explain the relationship between crossing over and genetic mutation?

OpenStudy (aveline):

Crossing over occurs during the stage of meiosis. During this stage, chromosomes exchange genetic materials by literally crossing over each other. Imagine two X's overlapping - that's what it's like. Genetic mutation are alterations in a gene sequence. If two chromosomes improperly cross-over during meiosis it can cause genetic mutations.
