can someone explain the relationship between crossing over and genetic mutation?

Crossing over occurs during the stage of meiosis. During this stage, chromosomes exchange genetic materials by literally crossing over each other. Imagine two X's overlapping - that's what it's like. Genetic mutation are alterations in a gene sequence. If two chromosomes improperly cross-over during meiosis it can cause genetic mutations.
