Why is NaOH used as a purifier of ethene, in the preparation of ethene from dehydration of ethanol?

If sulphuric acid is used as the dehydrating agent some carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide are present in the reaction products. Passing through NaOH will remove these contaminants.
