A physical education class has three times as many girls as boys. During a class basketball game, the girls average 18 points each, and the class as a whole averages 17 points per person. How many points does each boy score on average?

Think of it this way Let's just say you had 3 girls and 1 boy So let's say all the girls had 17 points each, that gives them an average of 17 So that means that to get the average of the 1 boy you do \[(17+17+17+x)\div4=16\] the x is the number of points the boy got because you don't know how much he got Solve for the x
Did you mean to put a 16?
Oh my bad I'm so sorry I got the numbers mixed up The 17's should be 18's and the 16 should be 17
I'm really really sorry for that mishap!
SO anyway for whatever answer you get is always the same no matter how many boys and girls you have because average are always the same if you scale up the number of data
This made so much more since after you corrected it! I have been looking at how people got answers for an hour now and still couldn't understand it! Thanks so much!
No problem and again I apologize for the mess up- you probably could've gotten done a lot faster
