OpenStudy (jaylelile):

Molly is supposed to call her boyfriend every Thursday night. There are two phone companies she can use: TCC charges $0.15 per minute (no matter how long the call). UFC charges $0.55 for the first minute plus $0.10 for every additional minute. How many times can Molly talk to be charged the same amount by either phone company?

Directrix (directrix):

"times"--> Does that mean separate phone calls or total minutes for one call?

OpenStudy (seratul):

Even though I don't know the answer yet, I can tell you how to solve it. I recommend making a chart for both TCC and UFC on how much you pay for each minute. Start with UFC. First minute is .55, second minute is .65, and third is .75. Keep adding .15 each time. For TCC, first minute is 15, second is 30, third is 45, and so on. You should arrive to your answer quickly with this. You could make an equation, but this method should be just as useful.

Directrix (directrix):

Let x be the number of talked minutes. TCC: .15x cost UFC: .55 + .10(x - 1) If the question is how many minutes Molly can talk to be charged the same by both companies, then: .15x = .55 + .10(x - 1) should give the number of those minutes.

OpenStudy (jaylelile):

I got 9 minutes. Is this right?

OpenStudy (jaylelile):

@Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

I cranked this out got 9 minutes, same as you. >> .15x = .55 + .10(x - 1)

Directrix (directrix):

So, I would say yes.

OpenStudy (jaylelile):

yay! Thank you so much!

Directrix (directrix):

You are welcome, as always.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes it is 9
