For f(x) = x2 and g(x) = (x − 5)2, in which direction and by how many units should f(x) be shifted to obtain g(x)?
Ok lets get started I'm gonna try and guide you through this. Is that ok?
sure this is for my notes so that is what i wanted
Nice. Good deal. Now first of all when something is graphed it moves around differently based on if it's inside or outside parentheses.
If something is inside parenthesis the graph will shift on the x axis. If it is outside parenthesis it will shift on the y axis.
in other words the entire solution is almost entirely dependent on the parenthesis symbols.
so if your equation is g(x) = (x - 5) which axis will it be shifted on or to put it another way will it go left/right or up/down.
right?
yes. since it's shifting on the x axis it will go left or right. Now we determine the direction.
however we aren't don yet.
We still don't know the direction it's going in.
To do this we simply look at the symbol in between the numbers.
i beleve the anwser is right 5 units
If the 5 was outside the parenthesis we shift it up if it's positive and down if it's negative. However if it is inside the parenthesis we do the reverse and shift it to the left if it's positive and right if it's negative.
So yes your right. We do it to the right by 5 units.
thanks alot i medal and fanned and testimonied you for not directly giving me the anwser
Thanks. For the medal. I'm not on often though but feel free to link me if you need help.
Have a good day.
