Solve for Height by Volume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Volume of this pyramid is 120, what is it's height?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ANYONE?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please, I need to know how to do this.

OpenStudy (ashtorah13):

Sorry I thought I knew, Im sure someone will help soon They are good at getting to people.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for trying!

@vishweshshrimali5

OpenStudy (ashtorah13):

A=(1/2)hb

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, how do I make that work for this problem?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Basically... you can relate volume and height by simple formula: Volume = Area of base * Height...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

...don't laugh but how do I figure out area of base?

OpenStudy (ashtorah13):

12X5 divides by 2 I believe

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Don't worry I am not laughing... :) See in base you have a right angled triangle.. what is it's area? Recall the formula.. Area of triangle = 1/2 * base *height

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

|dw:1458615367914:dw|

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Can you calculate the area of this triangle ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Great!!

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Now, recall the formula: Volume = Area * Height You want to find Height / Volume So, that would be? Height / Volume = 1/ Area You calculated area to be 30... so what would be the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Um, 120/30 = 40?

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Good.. so height would be 40 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks so much!!!!

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

No sorry... that would be 4 :D

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

120/30 = 4 not 40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how so? Also, thats not on my list of answers but 40 is

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Can you recheck that volume was 1200 or 120 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

120

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

Then there must be some mistake in the question... See..volume = 120 and area = 30 So, 120 divided by 30 is 4 not 40... so height should be 4...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh boy. this happens alot, let me screenshot my choices

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

The answer would be 40 only if volume is 1200... we calculated the area perfectly..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh boy, I'll ask my teacher but for now I'll go with 40. IN these situations it's best to go with something close. (Online school problems.) Thanks so much for your helo though! Hold on a sec I'll tell you if I got it right.

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

(y) Sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope, they wanted 12.........

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll ask my teacher. Thanks though! Have a great night!

OpenStudy (vishweshshrimali5):

:) Same to you
