For this question, I'd be adding 4 + 4 and 4 + 10 (because it say's to add 4 to both sides) but how am I to know it is equal on both sides like the question asks? (pic below)

They would be the same because you're adding the same number to each side.

If you used different numbers like 4 and let's say 15.. it wouldn't be the same on each side..
