Simplify each expression. (3.2x - 4.1) - (-x + 7.6)

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

any ideas where to start?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not a clue.

OpenStudy (helpkay):

I see if I can help i haven't done these for a long time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OKay thanks for help!

OpenStudy (helpkay):

np

OpenStudy (helpkay):

first what does x always = to when we don't know the value of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it equal to 1?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yes good job ok so now we have to group the numbers according to their signs do you know how to do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont know how to do that.

OpenStudy (helpkay):

ok so we will have to move the number over so they ar in the same group

OpenStudy (helpkay):

so you have (3.2x - 4.1) - (-x + 7.6) you need to get the 3.2x and the -x (wich is 1) to be group together and the 4.1 and the 7.6 to be group together

OpenStudy (helpkay):

now here is the thing what do you see in front of 4.1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Negative sign

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yes most people think it means you subtract that number but it means that the number after it is a Negative good job what if you have a positive like (-x + 7.6)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does it mean to add it?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

nope it means that the x is negative and the 7.6 is a positive in a problem like these the number inside () it makes the number a negative or a positive based on the sign in front of it but what if you only have a number like (2-5) in a case like this the 2 is a positive and the 5 is a negative do you get that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay yes I get it.

OpenStudy (helpkay):

ok so now you need to group the according to i forget what it really call but i'm going to say they value because some have a x and some don't

OpenStudy (helpkay):

so here is your problem (3.2x - 4.1) - (-x + 7.6) how do you think you are going to group them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.2x - x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and -4.1 + 7.6?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

nope what do you see in the middle of both problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A minus sign.

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yes so now how do you think it's done

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3.2x - -x and -4.1 - 7.6?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yes way to go

OpenStudy (helpkay):

so now what do you do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

YAY and I am not really sure do I turn 3.2x - -x into 3.2x + x?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

no you subtract 3.2x - -1 then -4.1- 7.6

OpenStudy (helpkay):

what do you get

OpenStudy (helpkay):

what is 3.2x - -1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.2 ?

OpenStudy (helpkay):

yes and what is -4.1- 7.6

OpenStudy (helpkay):

btw you have to include the x so it is 4.2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-11.7?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah I forgot about the x.

OpenStudy (helpkay):

excellent so put the together and what do you get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4.2x - 11.7

OpenStudy (helpkay):

good job way to go excellent perfect :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much for help hope you have an awesome day !

OpenStudy (helpkay):

you to i will give you a medal for all that hard work and not cheating by just wanting the answer without doing the work please fan in return

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh thank you and I will!
