The colonists needed to establish a community-complete with churches and schools-where families could grow. Jamestown needed farmers to grow food to sustain the colony. Fifty acres of land were promised to those who could pay their own fare across the ocean to Virginia." Z. "Daniel Shays, against his will, had become a leader of the rebellious citizens. Shays, who had served with distinction as a captain in a Massachusetts regiment, had returned from the war expecting to be paid for his military service. Like other veterans, he was still waiting.
