for part 1... you have to differentiate the function "y" ... this way you will get the slope of the tangent at a point (x,y) ... Hence, at point (x,y) the normal's slope would be negative inverse of the tangent's slope... slope of normal = -1 / (slope of tangent) Does that help ?
