Photosynthesis will transfer carbon from the nonliving environment to the living environment, as carbon in the air (non living) is converted into sugar for the plant to use as energy (living). Burning would be a transfer from living to non living.

@fractal27 Yeah you're right. Carbon in the "non-living environment" would be like CO2 in the air, or oil and coal in the ground. Carbon in the living environment is the carbon that helps to make up organisms, by being in our proteins, lipids, starches, etc.
