-3 and 9/18 becomes -3 and 1/2 Next find the common denominator for both fractions which is 6. Whatever you do to the denominator, do to the numerator. Your new fractions will look like this: 5 and 2/6 + (-3 and 3/6) Add them: 2 and 5/6 is your answer

You also don't have to to reduce the -3 and 9/18 but I find that's easier to do.
