NEED HELP. Solve for x: |2x + 6| − 4 = 20

OpenStudy (freckles):

add 4 on both sides assume a>0 then use that |x|=a then x=a or x=-a since |a|=a and |-a|=a

OpenStudy (freckles):

you will have two equations to solve

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm im a little confused @freckles sorry

OpenStudy (freckles):

have you added 4 on both sides? if so please write what you have after that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would my answer be x=9 and x=11 ?

OpenStudy (freckles):

|2x+6|-4=20 add 4 to both sides |2x+6|=20+4 |2x+6|=24

OpenStudy (freckles):

|2x+6|=24 gives you 2x+6=24 or -(2x+6)=24 solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=3
