Fan and medal!! Despite Nixon's reputation as a hardliner against communism, he visited China and established a relationship with the Chinese. Why did he do that? He expected to achieve economic gains through trade with the capitalist Chinese government. The UN Security Council had asked him to do this. He thought that improved relations with China would also improve relations with the Soviet Union. The military needed to purchase Chinese ammunition following the Vietnam War.
