jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're looking for the amount you save? or the final price (before tax)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

amount I save, the word problem says "15% discount off pre-tax amount"

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

then you have the correct final answer 0.15*2075 = 311.25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks Jim!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do I subtract 311.25 from 2075 as last step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you want to find the final price after the discount, but before taxes, yes you do

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

an alternative is to multiply by 0.85 why this? because 100% - 15% = 85% = 0.85

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so `saving 15%` is the same as saying `paying 85% of the full price` since the two add to 100%
